Wakefield to Have CT Scan

It looked like a missile flying at him, and Tim Wakefield's first fear was that he was going to be struck in the head by that Jose Molina liner in the bottom of the fourth inning Saturday night.

But the veteran knuckleballer did his best to avoid that scary scenario, and the ball scorched him on his right shoulder blade, before caroming to shortstop Nomar Garciaparra for a bizarre - and painful - 1-6 out in your scorebook.

Wakefield will undergo a CT scan on Sunday.

"It's stiff," said Wakefield. "There is a mark where the ball hit. I saw the doctor after the game. He wants me to get a CT scan and make sure nothing is [broken]. It caught me right on the edge of the shoulder blade."

Wakefield's next scheduled start is on Thursday at Fenway Park, when the Red Sox are scheduled to play a day-night doubleheader vs. the Orioles.

With that in mind, Francona took the pitcher out after he completed that fourth inning.

"I'm just glad it didn't hit me in the head," said Wakefield. "It was coming right at my face. It hit me right on my throwing side, on the edge of my shoulder blade. I was glad to get an out out of it."

The Sox and Wakefield took an 8-3 loss to the Angels. Wakefield allowed eight hits and five runs in his four innings.

Francona hopes that one of his most reliable pitchers isn't lost for any period of time.

"We think he's going to be pretty sore," Francona said. "He thinks he's going to be OK, which is kind of encouraging. He took a pretty good shot."
