Sox Pitch Favorite Films
Boston Globe
By Carol Beggy and Mark Shanahan
March 31, 2005

The hype surrounding "Fever Pitch" is at a fever pitch. Just check out the cover of the upcoming issue of Entertainment Weekly, which has the film's two stars, Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon, and center fielder Johnny Damon.
Inside, the mag asks several Bosox players to name their favorite baseball movies. Pitchers Tim Wakefield and Keith Foulke, and general manager Theo Epstein all like "Bull Durham" the best. (Wake's reason? "It's just a classic. Some of the stuff that goes on in the movie is totally true. It also shows that the catcher is the brains behind the operation. They always are.")

Jason Varitek opts for another Kevin Costner flick, "Field of Dreams," while David Ortiz picks yet another Costner movie, "For Love of the Game." ("It showed you exactly what we go through when we play," said Big Papi.)

Pitcher Mike Timlin gives "The Natural" two mitts up. "It's about a ballplayer who had trouble in his life, and baseball evened that out for him. Baseball is his equilibrium," said the reliever, sounding like a regular film critic. "It soothed something in his life. We all have trouble outside the field and this is our sanctuary."

The worst? "Damn Yankees," said Wakefield. "Not because of the title. . . . I just didn't really care for singing and dancing with baseball."
